Listening Office

Since its creation in May 2016, and following the guidance of Irish expert Ian Elliott, the Listening and Support Office was established by the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae as a permanent space to receive reports of abuse committed by members or former members of the institution and to provide appropriate assistance to victims.

On January 17th, 2025, the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae was informed of the decision by the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life—with the specific approval of Pope Francis—to suppress the Sodalitium. In this new context, and with greater clarity regarding the responsibilities and competencies of the General Government, it was decided that the Listening and Support Office would continue its functions until February 28th, 2025.

During these years, the Office was led by Dr. Silvia Matuk, who ensured the reception of reports and guided complainants through the processes of listening and comprehensive reparation. Additionally, the work of the Office was guided by Pope Francis’ Motu proprio Vos estis lux mundi (2023), along with other regulations issued by the Holy See for Societies of Apostolic Life.

The Office benefited from permanent external advisory support from the Spanish institution Eshmá, a professional and independent organization specialized in assisting victims of abuse within the Catholic Church. From September 2021 to February 2025, this institution supported the General Government of the Sodalitium in making the best possible decisions regarding the abuse cases presented to the Listening and Support Office.

During the 6th General Assembly of the Sodalitium in Aparecida (Brazil), the Report on Reparations carried out through the Listening and Support Office was made public. The Sodalitium Christianae Vitae reported that, as of December 2024, it had carried out 83 reparation processes through out-of-court agreements.
