Bridges: A project with a solidarity and spiritual impact in Lima, Peru

Bridges‘ mission, focused on promoting personal and community reconciliation through fraternal service, is manifested in the experiences of those who participate in this noble cause. In this note, we present the testimonies of missionaries and beneficiaries who have experienced first-hand the impact of Bridges’ missions and solidarity work in one of the most disadvantaged areas of Lima, Peru.

Bridges concentrates most of his apostolate in ‘Nueva Rinconada’ in the ‘Pamplona Alta’ area, a community in the Lima district of San Juan de Miraflores. Three times a week, Bridges volunteers come to this location to help numerous families through various community outreach efforts, praying the rosary, and other spiritual activities.

Consolidating the encounter with God

Bridges’ work not only touches the lives of the people who are beneficiaries of the missions and campaigns, but also seeks to strengthen their spiritual experience, as noted by Liss, who discovers in the weekly meetings a way to deepen his experience with God.

“Maybe before we talked with God, but not as much as we do now with Bridges. Every Thursday we are in a different house with the Virgin. They have taught us to pray the Rosary, and thanks to Bridges we have been able to further consolidate our arrival to God with the rosaries and retreats,” she tells us.

Neyer, another young beneficiary, says excitedly: “I found a very big family. “I’m learning a lot of things with them, they welcomed me as if I were one of the team and I feel very happy.”

Bridges Missionary Testimonies

For the missionaries, the experiences lived at Bridges are transformative. Father Ryan, an American priest who participated in one of Bridges’ missions in Peru, expresses his gratitude in the following way: “Being able to share the love of God in community is a great blessing as a priest, it fills my heart with pride.” and happiness.”

The experience of Joey, who has participated in one of Bridges’ missions, highlights the joy and strength of the people they have assisted, despite their difficult circumstances.

“Of all the places I have been, I have never seen so much joy and these are people who find themselves in the most difficult situations I have ever seen,” he says.

“They are so happy and it is amazing to see that it is actually not material things that bring joy, but it is life itself and God who bring their joy with you and that you can be happy wherever you are, as long as your heart is in the correct place”.

“I was always taught to appreciate what you have and be grateful, but you really process that and realize what it means when you are in a situation where you see children who don’t have shoes and you interact with people who don’t have food guaranteed while that I could go out to eat every night of the week if I wanted, this makes you feel more grateful, truly grateful,” Olivia shares.

On the other hand, Matthew, referring to spiritual moments such as Eucharistic adoration and praying the rosary, highlights that “Bridges provides that meeting space that many of these people need and that fulfills them, I think that spiritually Bridges is doing an incredible job and “He is able to show Jesus and the Holy Spirit to this community.”

Finally, Francesco, highlighting that in this experience both the missionaries and the neighbors love to share their time together: “We build together, we eat together, we play together and that is the real impact that I see. I see the children grow up and they are curious about coming to Mass, they are curious about what it is to be Catholic.”
