Bridges organizes Christmas solidarity campaign

This year represented a new challenge for Bridges, the political and social context in Peru is difficult and this had an impact on the ability of people to organize solidarity events.  The volunteers and organizers did not allow themselves to be defeated by adversity and brought the true meaning of Christmas to Manchay and three human settlements in Pamplona, San Juan de Miraflores.  The solidarity visits were carried out between December 10th, 11th, 17th, 20th and 24th.

Our brother Alejandro Molina, director of Bridges, tells us that “the preparation work for these campaigns has been carried out several months in advance.  We started with several censuses, visits to families and getting to know the neighbors more closely.  The deliveries and solidarity campaigns are not limited to central days but expand to the accompaniment that we have had with the neighbors over time”.

The most concrete work during the campaigns has been the love of neighbor.  During the solidarity visits, ‘The box of love’ was also delivered.  The box has responded to a material need transformed into an instrument to be able to reach the beneficiary neighbors, in order to be able to transmit to them the love and true meaning of Christmas: Jesus.  It is a gift from family to family.

This year the campaign has focused on the slogan “I am here for you – Jesus”.  Together with Jesus and driven by Him, the volunteers and the Bridges team seek to reach the neighbors and accompanies them during this time of Advent and Christmas.  “In this way we become close to them, we show them that they are our brothers, that we care about them, we watch over them.  And above all, we show them with actions everything that we love each one of them.  Being a testimony of Love, we can say that we are fulfilling our objective of demonstrating that Jesus is true love”, Alejandro tells us.

Fatma Sleiman, a Bridges volunteer, tells us that “being able to bring the magic of Christmas to children who need a little bit of that joy to continue believing that the world has plenty of love to share is essential.  This year for the first time at the age of 26 I was able to live a Christmas close to Jesus.  These campaigns taught me to look at a new direction for my life.  I was 12 years old again and I felt the love of receiving a smile that brightened my morning.  I believe that these campaigns will not only remain in the hearts of all children, but in the hearts of all of us who participate in them.

Ronan Watterson, an American missionary, also participated in Bridges’ campaigns, and tells us about his experience that “during my time in Lima this December, I was blessed to work with Bridges during the solidarity visits.  As we went into campaigns, preparing and distributing donations, and getting to know the neighbors, we also prepared ourselves spiritually for the coming of Christ.  These experiences have been incredible but what struck me the most, compared to my other trips, has been the loving relationship that I have been able to develop with the neighbors and the people with whom I have worked.  Every time I am able to come serve in Peru, I return to the United States revitalized, rejuvenated, ready to bring this radical love that I have experienced to the secular world in which I live.  I thank God for the gift of spending time with those He loves this Christmas”.
