CLM and Sodalitium meditate on the laity in the mission of the Church

Is the work of the laity important for the Church? Can the laity evangelize in the same way as priests or consecrated persons? Questions like these we asked ourselves at the International Meeting ‘The person of the laity in the life and mission of the Church’ that we carried out, together with members of the Christian Life Movement (CLM), from September 2nd to 4th in Cali, Colombia.

This meeting was held with the aim of creating a space where participants can share reflections, points of view, converge initiatives and share experiences on the role of the laity in the evangelization of the Church.

For this, the meeting included presentations, dialogues, panels, dynamics, liturgies and moments of personal and community prayer.

The first panel of the Meeting was about Baptism and was led by Mariana Molano, a member of the CLM in Cali, who spoke about how from the Sacrament of Baptism, we are inserted in the life of the Church, so we have a call as laity to to live in the Church and to be part of its evangelizing mission.

Later, our brother from the Sodalit community of Cali, Carlos Arturo Tolmos, gave the talk ‘History of the laity and our spiritual family’ in which he highlighted the history and development of the Sodalit charism and how the laity’s vocation to evangelize should be inserted in the Church.

On the second day of the meeting we had a virtual dialogue with Msgr. José Ignacio Munilla, Bishop of Orihuela, Alicante, Spain. Here Bishop Munilla spoke to us about the role of the laity in the Church, its meaning and how there really is not much distinction in the call to holiness and evangelization in the particular missions of priests, consecrated persons and lay people. Later we had a panel on CLM Culture directed by Jimmy Torres (CLM Ecuador), Martha Palma (CLM Brazil) and Francesco Anzuini (CLM Italy). They shared with us, from each of their personal experiences, what evangelization means in culture and its importance within the spiritual family. They also shared with us their experiences in prayer, in their daily life, and how they have seen themselves called to evangelize in the cultural sphere.

Then, our brothers Carlos Muñoz (Assistant General of the Sodalitium Apostolate), Alexandre Borges (General Coordinator of the CLM) and F. Luis Troya, delved into the gift of our Sodalit charism with the panel ‘Living our charism in the middle of the world’, ‘A community where we can develop our identity and mission’, and ‘The priest and the laity’, respectively.

The same day also featured a visit and discussion with Msgr. Luis Fernando Rodríguez, Coadjutor Archbishop of Cali, who exhorted us to evangelize the world and how to assume this mission in our day-to-day lives. He also related the work that the diocese of Cali has done in this area.

Regarding this, Msgr. Rodríguez stressed that “if we remain only in doing, without it having that deep root that nourishes and gives it meaning by making our identity with Christ, which springs from baptism, then we only remain as some more workers”.

Some participants shared their apostolic experience in different places. Gary Siuffi (member of the CLM Cali and a psychologist by profession) has created a course in psychological care with his girlfriend; Francisco Aninat (Chilean sodalite) shared his experience of being a teacher of adolescents at the Saint Joseph school in Santiago de Chile; María José Armas (of the CLM Philadelphia) shared her apostolic experience in the CLM in the USA; and Kendra Scwein (CLM Denver) spoke about solidarity apostolate with the homeless.

On Sunday, a panel on faith and culture was held with the participation of Mónica Ibañez (CLM Lima), Pedro Collantes (CLM Ecuador) and Alfredo García (adherent). And finally we participated in the last panel about the family where Josefina Cañas (CLM Chile), Óscar Álvarez (CLM Ecuador), Gary Siuffi and Isabela Cañas (CLM Cali) shared the importance of the family in the experience of the charism and evangelization in church.

For Susana de Salazar, from CLM Ecuador, this event was “an encounter with my friends, brothers and, in a special way, with the Lord and Holy Mary. I am leaving renewed, I am driven to continue in the family apostolate”.
