El Comercio highlights the ‘Sponsor a Grandparent’ campaign by Solidaridad en Marcha Peru
In Peru, Solidaridad en Marcha – SEM (“Solidarity in Motion”) manages two homes that take in abandoned elderly people. The San Lucas homes in Callao and San Vicente in Arequipa not only provide necessary care and attention, but also offer a space for personal reconciliation. These homes have become refuges full of love and care, where the elderly can live with dignity.

Recently, the newspaper El Comercio published an article titled “Stories of hope and gratitude from seniors rescued from extreme poverty and abandonment: Sponsor a Grandparent.” This report highlights the moving stories of Don Carlos Biondi and Don Oswaldo, residents of the Hogar San Lucas.
Don Carlos Biondi, 90 years old, lost his sight 10 years ago but remains lucid and in good spirits. His life has been marked by loss and loneliness: after the tragic death of his daughter and then his wife, he found a place of peace and care at the Hogar San Lucas.
Don Oswaldo, 77, has lived a life full of adventures and challenges. From his childhood in Barrios Altos to his service in the Peruvian Air Force, his life has been a roller coaster of experiences. After several events, he found refuge at Hogar San Lucas, where he is grateful for the care and affection.
“In all my years of life, I have never met human beings like the people who take care of us here. They care about us, they are like angels. I am grateful to them, I live happily with them,” Don Oswaldo told El Comercio.
Through these stories, which you can read here, El Comercio highlights the importance of the Solidaridad en Marcha sponsorship program, which seeks to raise funds to support the essential services that our “grandparents” need.
The “Sponsor a Grandparent” campaign
In 2023, donations received through the sponsorship program allowed the annual budget of the San Lucas and San Vicente homes to increase by 30%, according to a report by Solidaridad en Marcha Peru. This increase has been crucial to ensuring a balanced diet for the elderly, providing necessary medical treatments, hiring care staff, and making improvements to the homes’ infrastructure, significantly benefiting all residents.

SEM is dedicated to various areas of assistance, standing out in the educational field in disadvantaged areas of Arequipa, where it runs three charitable schools. In addition, it provides health services through medical centers, offers care in daycare centers and nursing homes, and provides ongoing care in the needy Pamplona area of Lima, addressing infrastructure needs and offering spiritual support to the community.
