Mary at the heart of art: Two unmissable exhibitions in Peru during the Marian month

The month of May is dedicated to honoring the Virgin Mary with many expressions in different places around the world. In Peru, the Cultural Theater and Social Institute (ICTYS) presents us with two options that are samples of popular art in homage to the Mother of God.

The Virgin Mary in the popular devotion of Peru

In collaboration with the Jesuits of Peru and the Andean Baroque Route, ICTYS presents the popular art exhibition entitled “The Virgin Mary in the popular devotion of Peru.” This exhibition will take place at the Chapel of Our Lady of Loreto, located at Loreto 111, Cusco, and will open its doors on Thursday, May 9th at 7:00 pm until Sunday, June 16th.

It is important to note that of the 401 declarations on intangible cultural heritage that Peru has to date, 27 focus on festivities dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The works presented in this exhibition are inspired by 17 of these festivities.

On the other hand, the Chapel of Our Lady of Loreto, where the works are exhibited, is located in the Monumental Zone of Cusco, which was recognized as a Historical Monument of Peru in 1972. In addition, being located in the heart of the historic center of the city, it is part of the central area that UNESCO distinguished as Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 1983.

Immaculate Mary” exhibition

Simultaneously, in the Parque del memoria cemetery in Lurín (Lima), the inauguration of the popular art exhibition “Immaculate Mary.”will take place on Sunday, May 5th at 12:00 pm. This exhibition will be open to the public from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with free entry.

This Marian collection will present 20 works selected from the regions of Áncash, Ayacucho, Cusco, Lima and Pasco that are samples of prominent artists such as Alberto Flores, Ángel Alfaro, Cony Novoa, Feriberto Aylas, Germán Romero, Giovanna Roca, Julián Ramos, Kania Dorregaray , Larry Segundo, Leoncio Huamán, Luis Luján, Marianela Cuycaposa, Richard Chávez, Sandra Bottger, Sixto Seguil, Tater Vera and Wilfredo Ramírez.
