“My spring break trip to Ecuador was the greatest conversion experience I’ve ever had”, says Trace Fernandez, who was part of the 96 FOCUS missionaries who, along with 20 young people from MVC Ecuador, carried out apostolic and aid activities for 3 communities. close to the city of Guayaquil: Chongón, Tarifa and Sabanilla.

The FOCUS missionaries who participated in this country are university students from “East Carolina University”, “Iowa State University”; “University of Kansas” and “University of Wisconsin-Platteville”.

Jewels Hurtgen (FOCUS) shares, “the families we met, the children we played with, the local missionaries we prayed with, and time with Our Lord have created beautiful memories that I will treasure”.

In Chongón, the missionaries helped the community center that serves as a place for children and the elderly to carry out different activities, often related to learning new skills that will help them in their daily lives, according to Kelly Mendoza, coordinator of MVC Ecuador missions.

On the other hand, the group of missionaries that worked in a town in Tarifa called La Alianza, which is very devoted to Santa Narcisa de Jesús, embellished a hermitage of this saint. They made a wooden mural for the altar, a garden outside and fixed the entrance with ceramics.

Finally, in Sabanilla, a small place on the outskirts of Guayaquil, “they continued the construction of cement steps in response to two specific needs that children have: first, it is a place where they can sit down to eat; and second, a place where they and the community can come together and enjoy watching sports or recreational activities”, shares Kelly.

Regarding this work, Claude Springer (FOCUS) says: “what we did for the Sabanilla school was not only beneficial for the community, but also for us. We created inseparable bonds as friends and gained experience working with people in situations different from ours”.

Josué Jordán (MVC) shared with us that “on a day-to-day basis, love was the reflection of each moment”, and also told us that it edified him to see how “the (American) missionaries learned phrases in Spanish to be able to communicate with the people of the community or in plays for children”.

“My biggest challenge was fatigue, but it always faded at Communion time, because when the Lord entered my home, all my energy was restored and fatigue faded away”, shared João Pedro Bechtlufft (Mission Brazil), who is year he participated as a mission assistant after having participated in the Mission Brazil training program and in more than 4 missions as a volunteer.

Among the activities carried out were moments of catechetical formation, home visits and care for the sick and the elderly. Júlio Egrejas, a member of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae director of Mission Brazil, shared that the missions “had a result well above expectations and lead to projecting greater growth in the coming years”.

Tallita Freitas (Mission Brazil) comments that “participating in Mass with the foreign missionaries and the community is a moment that I really enjoy, as she shows that even though we are from different cultures, our faith is the same!”

“Here in Brazil I realized that the experience of Christ’s redemption is something incredible in our lives. With people welcoming me into God’s love, I was now able to see how important it is not to give up my faith and continue to practice my Catholicism, going to Mass every day, speaking directly with Jesus Christ. This week of missions was one of the most amazing weeks of my life and I will remember it forever!” said Brendan Weed (FOCUS).
