Pope Francis receives the Apostolic Commissioners for the Sodalitium

Last Thursday, December 13th, the Holy Father Francis received in private audience the Apostolic Commissioners for the Sodalitium, Monsignor Noel Londoño, C.Ss.R., and Fray Guillermo Rodríguez, OFM; accompanied by Monsignor José Rodríguez Carballo OFM, Secretary of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (DIVCSVA), to discuss the apostolic visit of the Commissioners to the communities of the Sodalitium in the 9 countries where it is present, as well as the holding of the upcoming V General Assembly.

The Apostolic Commissioners informed the Holy Father about the end of the apostolic visit they have made to the Sodalit communities since the beginning of the Commissariat period in January 2018. After the dialogues held with the Sodalits and getting to know their apostolic works better, they shared with the Pope the current situation of the Sodalit and everything that has been done in the process of community renewal.

Once the holding of the V General Assembly was approved, there was discussion about the process to follow for the election of the new authorities, both that of the new Superior General and that of the new members of the Superior Council for a new period of government of 6 years, seeking that this be an opportunity to rediscover and strengthen the Sodalit charism.

The Commissioners also reported on the situation of community formation and the importance of strengthening it, especially in initial formation, through the elaboration of the Ratio formationis.

The future support that the Holy See will provide to the Sodalitium following its Fifth General Assembly was also discussed.

The 5th General Assembly of the Sodalitium will be held in the city of Aparecida (Brazil) in January 2019 and will be presided over by Msgr. Londoño. It will be attended by the Deputy Commissioner, Card. Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark and Pontifical Delegate for the economic affairs of the Sodalitium; as well as Fr. Gianfranco Ghirlanda, SJ, appointed by the DIVCSVA as Advisor for the 5th Assembly.

Bishop Noel Antonio Londoño Buitrago, C.Ss.R., before being appointed by Pope Francis as Bishop of Jericho in June 2013, was Rector of the Major Seminary of the Redemptorists, General Consultant of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and Coordinator of the Redemptorist Missionaries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

For his part,  Fray Guillermo Rodríguez, OFM, a Mexican Franciscan priest, is a specialist in canon law and was appointed by Pope Francis as Deputy Commissioner of the Sodalitium since January 10, 2018.
