Young Volunteers from Siloé Bring Hope and Joy of Christmas to Hospitalized Children in Piura

Last Sunday, just days before Christmas Eve, a group of 10 university students, volunteers from Siloé Piura, made a special visit to the Cayetano Heredia Hospital. Their mission was to bring hope, joy, and the true meaning of Christmas to 14 hospitalized children and their families.

Angélica Castillo, coordinator of Siloé Piura, shared that the activity was the result of days of preparation and organization. “The week before the visit, we prepared gifts, mini panettones, and chocolate milk for the parents of the children in the hospital,” she explained. During the visit, the volunteers performed a theatrical catechesis about the birth of Jesus, engaged in interactive activities in the rooms, and handed out gifts to the children and babies in the hospital.

The visit not only touched the children but also moved their parents, who expressed their gratitude for the volunteers’ solidarity. “It was very special to do this through Siloé because the parents didn’t feel alone. We were able to bring them joy and a lot of hope during a difficult time for everyone,” Angélica emphasized.

Additionally, the remaining gifts were distributed to children in downtown Piura and at gas stations near the hospital, extending the impact of this act of kindness.

Volunteers Bringing Merciful Love to Children

Alonso Zurita, one of Siloé’s volunteers, shared the experience as a visit “full of emotions and a lot of love”. That day, he had a special encounter with Fabio, a seven-month-old baby who had recently survived a cardiorespiratory arrest. “We were able to say a prayer for him, for his recovery.”

“It was touching to see Fabio’s strength and to feel that God has an immense plan for his life. His mother, although moved, thanked us very much for the visit and for the gifts. Now I pray a lot for him, because I know he is a very strong child like all the children who are there”.

Alonso emphasized that the experience filled his heart and reaffirmed the purpose of his work as a volunteer. “Visiting (the sick) makes you feel that God’s love is infinite and that we must take it to those who need it most. That is what we do as volunteers: bring that immense and merciful love to the children.”

Solidarity with the families of sick children

The initiative by Siloé volunteers not only brought joy to the lives of hospitalized children but also uplifted the spirits of their families, reminding them that they are not alone in the midst of adversity. These acts of love and generosity served as preparation for Christmas Eve: sharing hope, joy, and faith with those who need it the most.
