Our Superior General, José David Correa, participated in the 98th assembly of the Union of Superiors General (USG) held at Fraterna Domus Sacrofano, near Rome, Italy, from November 23rd to 26th.

Pope Francis received the participants to this Assembly in a private meeting held in the Council room in the Vatican, on Saturday, November 26th. In this event, José David had the opportunity to meet again with the Holy Father Francisco and greet him personally.

Under the motto ‘Called to be artisans of peace’, this assembly developed various themes that will enrich the work of the Church on the way to becoming efficient artisans of peace.  This reflection was inspired by Pope Francis encyclical Fratelli tutti in which the Holy Father reminds us of the call “to generate processes of healing and reunion with ingenuity and audacity”.  (FT. 225)

Among the themes developed in this assembly, the following stand out: ‘Solidarity with Sudan.  A new paradigm of consecrated life’, ‘Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation and the synodal process’ and ‘Formation in Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation in formation programs for religious life’.

In addition, the assembly was attended by Msgr. Paul Gallagher, from the Vatican Secretary of State, and Dr. Dolores Sánchez, from the Dicastery for Integral Human Development.  Both contributed from their experience and knowledge to broaden the horizon of the attendees to reflect on how to contribute to strengthening their commitment to the ministry of reconciliation.

Regarding these days of meeting, our Superior General highlights that “sharing with brothers from all parts of the world who serve their religious communities as superiors general is a gift from God because it allows us to learn a lot from other realities to better serve the Lord”.

Faced with the sad world reality, José David also shared that “the experience of reconciliation is a very urgent task today and it is up to each one of us, from the particular charism that the Lord invites us to live, to actively cooperate with the grace of God to be artisans of peace and reconciliation”.

The purpose of the USG is to promote the life and mission of the different institutes of consecrated life, encouraging better collaboration between them and more fruitful contact with the Holy See.  It is made up of the general superiors of more than 200 male congregations with Pontifical Approval.
