TV Peru visits the San Lucas Home: Senior Citizens’ Day in Peru
The program “Noticias mañana” on TV Perú visited our grandparents at the Hogar San Lucas de Solidarity in Motion (SIM) in Callao to report on the solidarity campaign “Sponsor a Grandparent.”
Fabiola Avilés, SIM Peru Lima Project Coordinator, explained that the campaign aims to improve the quality of life of seniors in the two SIM Peru homes, located in Callao and Arequipa. “Any donation, no matter how small, will always have a great impact on them and will always help.”

It is worth remembering that Hogar San Lucas is a space in which SIM Peru provides comprehensive assistance and accompaniment to elderly people in a state of complete abandonment, offering them decent living conditions.
Why is Senior Citizens’ Day celebrated on August 26th in Peru?
Senior Citizens’ Day is celebrated on August 26th in Peru in honor of Saint Teresa of Jesús Jornet e Ibars, patron saint of the elderly. The date coincides with the anniversary of her death in 1897 in Valencia, Spain. Saint Teresa dedicated her life to caring for the elderly , founding the congregation of the Little Sisters of the Helpless Elderly.
In recognition of their work and the importance of older adults in society, this date was chosen to promote respect and dignity towards them. The commemoration was made official in Peru in 2013 through Law 30088.

SIM is dedicated to various areas of assistance, standing out in the educational field in disadvantaged areas of Arequipa, where it runs three charitable schools. In addition, it provides health services through medical centers, offers care in daycare centers and nursing homes, and provides ongoing care in the Pamplona area of Lima, addressing infrastructure needs and offering spiritual support to the community.
