WYD Lisbon 2023: The 5 most moving moments for our Sodalit brothers

From Tuesday, August 1st to Sunday, August 6th, an impressive million and a half young people lived exciting moments in the sixteenth edition of World Youth Day. Since that first meeting in Rome in 1986, where 250 thousand souls gathered to hear the words of Saint John Paul II, who stated that WYD “means going out to meet God, who entered the history of Man through the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ”, a path of inspiration and conversion for millions of young people has taken place.

In the memory of many, the pilgrimage to WYD 2023 has already taken root as an unforgettable experience. Rudolf Haid, one of our brothers, like countless young people, affirms: “WYD 2023 was an experience that will last forever in my heart!”

In this note, we will explore moving moments that resonated in the hearts of five of our brothers. They were part of the delegations of young people from different corners of the world, where they carry out their apostolic mission.

The Holy Mass in the Sanctuary of Fátima

For Father Remigio (USA), one of the most beautiful moments was concelebrating at the Mass in Fatima, which was the Eucharist dedicated to the MVC. And it is not for nothing, since it took place in the same place where the Virgin appeared in 1917.

“At that moment, I thought a lot about how space and time is nothing, I was standing in the same place where that had happened and therefore the presence of the Virgin was of the same intensity. I contemplated the child Francisco enjoying receiving the blessings of Jesus and in this way I consoled the Heart of Jesus, I imagined myself as him there at that moment”.

“When I went to give Communion at that Mass, I saw that the majority of the members of the MVC went to receive Jesus the Eucharist in the place where I was, which was very nice, it was a very great communion, communion in our spirituality, with the universal Church and throughout history and the Church reigning in Heaven with the saints Jacinta, Lucía and Francisco”, Father Remigio shared with emotion, remembering that moment in Fátima.

For his part, Mr. Adrián Meza (Argentina) had the blessing of being a diaconate in the same Eucharist. “This was very special because I had to serve in the Chapel, which is very special because it is the place where the Virgin of Fatima appears to the little shepherds”, he says.

Many young people praying the Via Crucis with the Pope

On Friday, August 4th, the Eduardo VII Park located on the so-called “Colina Do Donde” in Lisbon vibrated with the Pope’s youth who were preparing to pray the Way of the Cross with Francis, among them our brother Rudolf Haid (Argentina) who, remembering that moment he tells us: “in addition to being very excited to be able to pray with the Holy Father during the seasons through which Jesus passed, at one point I became aware of the enormous number of young people who were praying and who had been summoned by the Successor of Peter”.

“And, at that same moment, I realized that the place we were in was called “Colina do Donde” (Hill of the Encounter). For me it was like being part of that crowd of people who were on the mountain to hear the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5:1). That is to say, an innumerable number of people who filled that Hill to meet the Lord, with his word and with his life. “I was very moved to experience what it meant to be part of that crowd”, Rudolf reflects.

A wonderful silence before Jesus Sacramented at the Vigil with the Pope

For Craig Kinneberg (Brazil) a very special moment during WYD was the vigil on Saturday night. “After a long and demanding trip to Campo da Graça, and after a beautiful sunset, Pope Francis arrived and there was a moment of Eucharistic adoration, with one and a half million people in a wonderful silence, it was really very exciting. In addition to the community atmosphere we experienced tonight, with many members of the MVC”.

Also impressed by the large number of young people praying in front of Jesus in the Eucharist in absolute silence, Mr. Adrián Meza shared: “when the moment of adoration arrived, we were all surrendered before Jesus, focused and looking at Him, this was quite special”.

Meeting with all my Sodalit brothers

Father Remigio, with great joy at the experience of meeting other of his Sodalit brothers, shared that this was a special moment at WYD. “The fact of seeing them with their people, like shepherds with their flock, was a constant joy. Some mornings we were having breakfast and singing traditional MVC songs and one of the most beautiful things was hearing people from Costa Rica, Italy, Colombia, Peru, the United States, singing the same songs”.

Listen to the Vicar of Christ

“It has been an experience of Church life where we have shared with many young people from different places in the world”, says our brother Julio Muriel (Peru), who traveled with a delegation of students from the Santa María de Chincha School, and shared the significant what this meeting with the Pope was for the youth group.

“Pope Francis’ words have also been very valuable, especially as he spoke in Spanish, they have touched the hearts of many of us and have helped us understand that God is so close and so present in our lives that he invites us to share this experience with others”, Julio shared.
